As a budget traveler, I like to be as prepared as possible for my travels in order to avoid any unexpected expenses. This includes making sure I have all necessities with me before, during and after my flight. While I always challenge myself to traveling with only a carryon luggage, I understand that most people need more things than I do on vacation.
Here’s a list of the must have items you should always bring along.
Whether it’s summer or winter, the temperature inside the cabin of an airplane is somehow always so unpredictable. My favourite accessory becomes a must to keep me comfortable during the flight. A light scarf can be used as a blanket to protect you from the drafts, a hood to block out light or a pillow for a little nap, plus they’re easily packable due to their thin airy fabric!
Valuable electronics and chargers
With the recent electronic bans in flights from certain countries and airlines, I understand that this may not always be possible. And you should always verify what you’re allowed to bring in the cabin before packing up your carryon baggage.
However, as much as possible, you should keep all your valuables with you at all times to limit the chances of your items being stolen or broken. Not only are you protecting your valuables by keeping them with you, but you’re also ensuring hours of potential entertainment!

As mentioned in the last paragraph on electronics, valuables should be with you and that includes your camera! You never know what you will run into (or who!) while you wait for your flight.
Airport food is so expensive that having a few packed snacks is a must for every budget traveler’s flights. Make sure you bring sealed packages such as granola bars, crackers or cookies. There’s nothing worse then being stuck on the tarmac for a while with a grumbling stomach.
Medications and medical necessities
Even if you’re on a short flight, always keep these in your carryon. Luggage regularly gets lost and delayed, and trying to get a new prescription in a different city, country or continent can be very difficult!

Change of clothes
This happens almost every time I travel with someone new. I recommend they pack a change of clothes, they don’t believe it necessary, the airline loses their luggage, then they’re stuck in jeans in 30 degree heat while the airline tries to locate their luggage. Don’t make the same mistake, and add in a bathing suit if going to a sunny destination!
There you are, with a list of the must haves for a comfortable flight and to ensure a good start to your vacation! What else do you always make sure to bring along?
