6 things you must have in Your Carryon Baggage

Westjet Costa Rica Flight
As a budget traveler, I like to be as prepared as possible for my travels in order to avoid any unexpected expenses. This includes making sure I have all necessities with me before, during and after my flight. That's why I always challenge myself to packing everything in my carryon! I understand that most people need more things than I do on vacation, but even if you take a checked suitcase with you, there are some things you should always have at your fingertips when traveling! Keep reading to find out what.
Although you can surely do without your belongings for a few hours, when you travel there's always a chance that a few hours without your luggage becomes a few days. Here's a list of the 6 essential items you should always bring in your carryon baggage!

Scarf
Whether it’s summer or winter, the temperature inside the cabin of an airplane is always unpredictable. Sometimes it will be freezing, other times it will be hot and sweaty. Somehow it's never just right! The best way to deal with this is with easy to layer clothing.

My favourite accessory becomes a must to keep me comfortable during the flight. A light scarf can be used as a blanket to protect you from the drafts, a hood to block out light or even as a pillow for a little nap. On top of that, they’re easily packable due to their thin airy fabric, and super stylish for those Instagram photos you're planning to take!

Valuable electronics and chargers
With some electronic being banned in flights from certain countries and airlines, I understand that this may not always be possible. And you should always verify what items you are allowed to bring in the cabin before packing up your carryon baggage.

However, as much as possible, you should keep all your valuables with you at all times to limit the chances of your items being stolen or broken. Watch from the plane windows and you will see suitcases being flung around left and right, ask a few traveler friends and you will hear at least one story about lost or delayed luggage. Not only are you protecting your valuables by keeping them with you, but you’re also ensuring hours of potential entertainment!

Camera
Same as for electronics, your camera should be with you at all times! With more and more people using their phones as their primary tool to take photo this isn't so much of an issue anymore. But for those with the separate camera, whether it's an expensive or a cheap one, keeping it with you will ensure that it is not thrown around, broken or lost. Plus, you never know what (or who!) you will run into while you wait for your flight.

Snacks and water
Airport food is so expensive that having a few packed snacks is a must for every budget traveler’s flights. Make sure you bring sealed packages such as granola bars, crackers or cookies. There’s nothing worse then being stuck on the tarmac for a while with a grumbling stomach.

For water it's not so easy... but if you bring an empty reusable bottle, chances are that you will be able to find a water refill station in the airport's secure area. With environmental issues becoming more and more on the forefront, a lot of airports are providing filtered water for free!

Medications and medical necessities
Even if you’re on a short flight, make sure to always keep these in your carryon, including medication, contact lens, and spare prescriptions. Luggage regularly gets lost and delayed, and trying to get a new prescription in a different city, country or continent can be very difficult!

A Change of clothes
This happens almost every time I travel with someone new. I recommend they pack a change of clothes, they don’t believe it necessary, the airline loses their luggage, then they’re stuck in jeans for two days in 30 degree heat while the airline tries to locate their luggage. Don’t make the same mistake! And to be safe, add in a bathing suit and sandals if you're going to a sunny destination!

There's an advantage to having everything with you when traveling, but for those who need more space, taking the must haves will ensure a comfortable flight and a good start to your vacation! What else do you always make sure to bring along?
