Airplane watching sunset over the clouds
Have you been daydreaming of sitting under the warm sun on a white-sand-turquoise-water-beach, lined with palm trees (i.e. paradise)? Or of adventuring through various markets in Thailand, taking the marvelous smells, tasting the mouthwatering street food and taking in the beautiful sights in this perfect sensory delight? Whether it be for a brief escape from the snow filled winter months or simply an excuse to use up vacation time, exploring the world is a much beloved experience by many.
However, travel costs in Canada are significantly higher than in many other countries, and that especially applies to flights. These can quickly leave you feeling overwhelmed and devastated at the thought of never having sufficient money for that dream vacation. Fret not! We're here to share our best 5 travel tips to go adventuring the world sooner then you thought possible with these tips and tricks on how to find cheap flights from eastern Canada! Regardless if you live in Halifax, Moncton, PEI or Cape Breton, have a read!

HOW TO FIND CHEAP FLIGHTS FROM EASTERN CANADA

1 -What does the flight typically cost?

Different destinations vary significantly in typical prices for flights, so it helps to know the usual cost for the destinations which you are considering. This will enable you to recognize a good deal when one comes up, as well as narrow down the possibilities of destinations.
For example, when considering traveling to Europe from Halifax it is typically cheaper to fly into Paris or London than it is to fly into Athens or Rome.

Our favorite websites to search flight prices include Google Flights and SkyScanner.

2 - How far can you get with the Canadian Dollar in that country?

It's essential to know the costs associated with travel expenses for the different countries or regions which you are considering. For example, it is much more expensive to travel through Switzerland than it is to visit Portugal or Greece. Asia is of course well worth a mention here as well, as most countries in this part of the world boast amazing opportunities for very cheap! Some of these countries might cost you more upfront for your flight, but make sure to add up all the expenses in order to get an accurate representation of the entire vacation budget. After all, there are many cheap flight deals that come out for Iceland, but once you get there you will quickly realize that you can't even get a meal for the cost of an average day's worth of spending in Thailand!

A great resource to check out if you are trying to plan your vacation on a budget is Nomadic Matt's Travel Guides, which provide great information on the various estimated costs for many countries world wide (keep in mind that his costs are usually the cheapest way of traveling, so if you won't be sleeping in a dorm room at a hostel, your costs will be higher!).

3 - Is there an amazing deal at another airport?

As east coasters, many of us are used to traveling fair distances for every day events, whether it be work, activities or visiting friends and families. If you're one of the many who's not phased by driving a couple extra hours, consider researching a few airports in your area! Having said that, always keep in mind the cost of gas, parking and any other applicable fees, along with the extra time that this will cost you, so to make sure the savings are in fact worth the extra effort.

For example, someone from Moncton might search deals in Fredericton, Halifax and Saint John. I've even seen great deals flying out of PEI - enough that it would have been well worth the travel time and bridge fee for someone who wanted to save some extra money!

4 - Are you gettung alerts?

Email or text alerts are great as they quickly share amazing deals as they come out, so you don't miss out! Granted, many companies nowadays tend to send out emails at a high frequency, even when there's no great deals! This just results in people getting frustrated with the "junk mail" and many people (myself included) eventually stop reading most emails coming in regardless if they claim to have "Once in a lifetime unbelievable deals!" (which turned out to be 200$ off a 2500$ trip, which isn't worth mentioning in my books!). In order to avoid having to glance through collections of emails in the hopes of finding amazing deals, we've opted to subscribe to YHZ Deals*! We love this website as they only send out emails when there are truly amazing deals available, so when you see an email from them you know it's safe to get excited as there must be a great deal that just came out.

*YHZ Deals is specific deals for the Halifax airport, but if you switch the airport code for your local airport such as YQM Deals for Moncton or YYG Deals for Charlottetown, you'll get results for your chosen airport.

5 - Can you get creative with flights?

Sometimes it pays big to get creative! Heading to Europe? Check if there's a seat sale to get you there, and then add the costs of traveling with a budget airline to reach your final destination! For example, I was looking into flights from Halifax to Lisbon (Portugal) the other day. Direct flights were starting in the 1300's but I was able to find a flight to London for 500$. Add the fee for transferring airports and a budget airline ticket, and it was 600$ cheaper than the original option, and more conveniently timed flights! Voila!

Don't forget that most budget airlines tend to use different airports than the ones where you might be landing, so look into required travel time in between airports and the cost of this, along with whether you will require a VISA to enter the country, as any of these can potentially add up and convince you to book the direct, more expensive flight.
