Where to Eat for Cheap in Halifax

It’s not always easy to find but there’s always cheap meals in Halifax when you know where to go! Halifax has great farmer’s markets, and the Halifax Seaport’s Farmer’s Market offers a delicious variety of budget friendly local meals. Other great options for locals’ favorite cheap meals such as Fish n’ Chips from John’s Lunch, poutines from Smokes’ Poutinerie and food trucks such as the Gecko Bus.

If you’re only looking for drinks you might consider Niche, or if you’re looking to buy food to cook for yourself check the sales flyers for Sobey’s, Superstore or Cheap Thrills, or go to Chops Meat Market or Gateway Meat Market for amazing deals.

Finally, some local delights not to be missed are fresh local seafood (Fisherman’s Market International in Bedford has fresh affordable options). Another locals’ cherished specialty are donairs. Donairs are made of donair meat (spiced ground beef) with raw tomatoes and onions, topped with sweet donair sauce typically made of evaporated milk, vinegar, garlic and sugar. All of this is placed on a pita bread which is then wrapped in tin foil and eaten by hands. Be warned though, it gets very messy quickly, so having a nearby plate with a fork and knife is advised! Great places to try a donair in Halifax are The King of Donair or Tony’s Donair and Pizza.

Best Budget Friendly Accommodations around Halifax

Halifax International Hostel is located in South End, and is a great spot with all of the action downtown action just a few minutes’ walk away. It is also close to the waterfront and the Halifax Seaport Farmer’s Market.

Halifax Backpackers Hostel is situated on Gottingen Street, near the ever popular North End of the city. It’s a great location if you’re looking to venture out to different areas of the city or beyond while still being near to essentials and able to walk to the city’s downtown core.
Halifax Backpackers Beach House is a perfect getaway outside the city while still having the city easily accessible. Individuals who enjoy exploring nature and the beach will certainly feel at home here, as the city is still within reach (having a vehicle would be best for this location).

Coastal Inn Halifax is located in Bayers Lake, which is known for its shopping and entertainment opportunities. Just a short drive away from downtown, this is a great budget friendly option for people wanting a great hotel room with easy access to most of the attractions through the nearby highway, yet is far away to discourage partying crowds.

As far as downtown Halifax hotels go, the best bang for your buck can be found at Atlantica Hotel which offers decent prices. However, it is often difficult to find truly cheap hotel accommodations within walking distance to the downtown area, so we suggest you might want to consider looking into AirBNB properties where you can find private rooms starting at 30CND/night.

Budget Friendly Transportation in Halifax

The budget friendliest options depend on which area of the city you are discovering. The downtown core is best explored by foot as parking usually costs 2-3$/hour and can be difficult to find. The ferry to Dartmouth’s Alderney Landing is a great cheap option to visit Dartmouth’s waterfront, or the Halifax Transit buses are great options if you are staying in the city but exploring further than walking distance. However, if you are leaving the city it is best to have a vehicle as public transit is often sparse, if available at all.

What to Pack to Visit Halifax

Best advice we can give you is: dress for the season! Make sure to check the weather and bring appropriate clothing for the season. This means cool clothing like shorts and t-shirts summer time, while fall and spring are best experienced wearing layers of clothing in order to adjust to the changing temperature throughout the day. Winter time clothing should include warm sweaters and socks, a winter jacket, mittens and a tuque. Warm waterproof footwear with good grip for ice is a bonus, especially during snowstorms or in case you decide to take on the ice covered sidewalks.

Regardless of the season during which you're visiting, make sure to have comfortable footwear if you plan to explore Halifax by foot, as the downtown core is located on a hill.

Bonus Tips for Visiting Halifax on a Budget

- Don’t bother bringing umbrellas, the wind in Halifax destroys more of these than you can imagine! Stick to rain jackets and boots with waterproof bags.

- During the summertime there is a free ‘train’ in the downtown core which is a type of hop on hop off service. This is a great free transportation in Halifax to explore the downtown core without having to climb the hill or simply to give your feet a rest.

- If you're not from Canada, you may be surprised that cannabis is in fact legal here! In Nova Scotia specifically, you can find cannabis in select local liquor stores (NSLC). (However, please use responsibly and read about the product on the government's website. And of course be mindful that just because it's legal here doesn't change it's illegal status in other countries, so do your research before using (including for your own country's potential consequences if you use cannabis) and make sure not to bring any back with you as carrying an illegal substance into a country will likely result in legal consequences.)

- Smoking in public is not allowed in the Halifax Regional Municipalities, so if you're a smoker make sure to only light up in a DSA (Designated Smoking Area) or on private property where it's allowed.

- Tipping is expected in restaurants, with typical amounts being 20% for good service.

- Don’t panic when the ground rumbles and you hear the big “bang” at noon – it’s just the daily noon guns from Citadel Hill.

7 - The city offers wonderful free yearly festivals, such as the Buskers ( in July) and Nocturne (in October).
