Traveling on spring break is one of the most expensive times of the year. The weeklong break comes just in time to give people from the northern hemisphere a break from the cold temperatures and thus the increases in demand push the prices way up. But don’t worry; there are ways of ensuring a budget friendly getaway, even in this busiest of seasons! Keep reading to learn how.

Spring break has a different meaning for everyone. For some students it’s that time of year when they get to let loose and have fun. For some of us in the working world, it’s a distant memory of simpler times when we had little to no responsibilities. For parents, it’s often a struggle of keeping kids busy and entertained. Either way, this school time off means that a lot of parents, students and teachers will be looking to take a break from winter and get away.

Go off the beaten path
The key to paying less is to avoid the popular places. Flight and accommodation prices tend to get quite high when the demand for it increases. By going off the beaten path you can avoid those increases and at the same time enjoy a more relaxed, quiet time away!

Look for a destination that is not very popular this season, such as non-beach locations. From Ottawa for example, we can get a round-trip flight to New York under 250$ CAD! Yes it would be cold, but just as fun as a trip to a tourist packed beach I’m sure!

Another option is to go a bit further to countries where the cost of living is very low. South East Asia, such as Vietnam, and South America, such as Peru, are good examples.

Look for alternate accommodations
Hotels get expensive quickly, even when you’re splitting costs with friends or family. Thankfully there are tons of options out there these days!

We tend to trust hotel chains the most because we recognize them and they are familiar. But by looking at other options such as Airbnb, bed and breakfasts, hostels and Couchsurfing, you could save hundreds!

My personal favourite is hostels – cheap stays, great atmosphere and the chance to meet travelers like you – but I realize it’s not for everyone, so choose what works for you and your budget. And remember to check out previous traveler’s reviews before confirming your booking!

Look out for all-inclusive deals
All-inclusive vacations are an easy option to making sure you stay within budget! Flights, accommodations, food and drinks are all included in the price and that makes it easier once you get there to stay within that budget.

Of course, since it’s spring break and all-inclusive vacations are usually in the warm temperate climates of the Caribbean, it’s a very popular choice amongst fellow vacationers. Keep an eye out for a good deal early, starting two to three months before your break. You may be able to find last minute deals as well, but don’t rely on it. Depending on the year, flights may sell out and therefore make the all-inclusive vacations pricier!

If all else fails, try a staycation!
Okay, so it’s not as exciting as the exotic locations you’ll be hearing about when everyone goes back to reality on the next Monday. But when your budget is tight, going away is simply not always an option. No worries, even in the smallest of towns you can find great things to do for your spring break!

If you’re aiming for a romantic getaway, try booking a couple’s massage at a local spa or a night at a nice hotel within driving distance. For family fun, organise some outdoor activities to match the kids’ energy levels and keep them entertained. Skiing, hiking and sports are always good options, but if the weather doesn’t cooperate, you may want to try bowling, interactive museums or indoor amusement parks. And finally for those looking for that party time, why not organize one at yours or a friend’s place? Make it themed party for that extra oomph!

We won’t be getting out for spring break this year as work is keeping us put. However, we would love to hear about your travel plans! Where are you headed for spring break?
